How good a musician wa Nick Mason??

I was wondering what the rest of you think on the matter, how good a drummer was Nick? His drum parts dont sound that technical in most of the Floyd stuff, and i have a friend who is a session musician and he say he could play Nicks stuff when he was about 12. He said it was all simple beats? Anyway, i always thought he was a vey able drummer, and his earlier stuff seemed more technical than his later stuff, but i still felt he was respected in the industry.

What do the rest of you think?

Nick's style was very simple and understated... very English if you will! Certainly not as wild as Keith Moon or even half as flamboyant!! He was a good solid time keeper but didn't really do anything technically demanding! Saying that, what he played was very fitting with the Floyd's songs!

You sum it up very well Kieth! His beats and rythm did fit in very very well with the Floyd sound. I haven't heard his solo work, any idea what the drumming was like on that?

Yeh, so this adds to the more relaxed feel? Im a big fan of Nicks drumming, and i believe a,ll the band were relativley good musicians, but im guessing Roger was the least able? And i truely believe that Rick and Nick do not get enough recognition for what they did.

As far as his "solo" work goes he has been cheating a lot! First he took the credits for "Grand Visier's Garden Party" that rightfully belonged to his then-wife Lindy, then he took the credit for "Fictitious Sports" that rightfully belonged to Carla Bley and in the end co-wrote some songs with Rick Fenn and took the credit for that too.

Btw, "Fictitious Sports" is not a bad album at all, if you don't look at it as a "Pink Floyd member solo album", which it certainly isn't.

Nicks playing through the Pompeii DVD is probably some of the best in my opinion. Especially OOTD and Echoes. His playing wasn't a technical workout but it wasn't in any way dull or boring.

Rather like Roger's bass playing (wink wink), Nick might not be the best drummer out there, but he fills his place in the Pink Floyd sound excellently.

I agree, it is simple but it is possibly the best drumming mucisianship i have heard!

From listening to it, and in no way am I musically-able, but in my opinion i think simple beats are better then really complex ones, I believe some of the others above me have also stated this.
