Can anyone tell me how to make my pictures small enough to be used as an avatar on this site please?

I think the max width is set to 100px.

I can't understand why this site can't accomodate pic on avatars as most other sites do. It's seem easier enough for other sites!

what about, say, uploading it to photobucket or something else....and then resizing it there??

or using something like vso image resizer (i think i used this for mine)

If you have Windows XP then you can install one of Windows Power Tools,"image resizer" from here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Down ... rtoys.mspx which works brilliantly at reducing image size with just a couple of clicks. After that you should be able to use that avatar creator

I tried that. But it was still too big.

I've just seen I can use a default. I'm throwing the towel in for now with my attempts to upload a pic.
