A New NPF Web Server.... again....

Post by Keith Jordan »

I think it is time to upgrade the NPF server again for a bigger one! I will probably do this next weekend. Just waiting for an email back from 1and1.co.uk about getting one of their beasty virtual servers.

We currently have the XL server... we shall have the XXL server instead! Twice as much RAM! I think the site is running so low because all the RAM is used and the server is running a lot off the "page file" which means virtual slow memory is being used on the hard disk instead of the very fast memory in a RAM chip!

http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/VpsW ... _lf=Static

So I shall upgrade the server to a 2GB RAM one next week. There may be a few days of downtime.

Still no Cobalt option, though; right?

A few days of downtime? Does this mean I'll have to turn off my computer and talk to normal people?

Perhaps in a couple of months when I get round to doing something about it. It seems to have speeded up a bit now since I started tinkering with it again. That bloody Joomla takes loads of resources to "render" or "output" its pages for some reason. I wish I had not bothered with Joomla now!!

I look after the website at work, and started wondering about Joomla and whether I should switch (I use Typo3, which is easy to use, but has certain limitations)...

If NPF had some static content, I think the server would be fine. But everything is database driven and resource intensive! Perhaps Joomla would be ok on a dedicated box with only a few thousand visitors per month.

If you can't get the Cobalt theme, could you instead get a Colbert theme?
