mirrored telly

Post by oldperfume »

Maybe this question has been asked before & if so I apologize. I was wondering whatever became of Syd's mirror-disc telecaster, the one he "always felt most closest to"? Did he sell it or give it away or maybe Gilmour has it? To me it was the most perfect sounding guitar I ever heard, looks not withstanding...Anyone!?!?

He sold it in part exchange for that black telecaster he had on the Mick Rock photo sessions.

However a word of note here. It was not a telecaster (shortened to tele not telly btw) it was an esquire. Esquires were different as they had no neck pickup and the switch instead routed the bridge pickup through several preset capacitor values making it still tonally different. The guitar was refinished by Syd, presumably the silver body was stick-on material and the mirrors were also stick on cosmetic mirrors. Apparently they got scratched up (he said so in an interview later on).

Sadly yes. It stands to reason the original is probably still around but the 2nd owner removed the mirrors and stuff. I know I would. If I walked in a shop and saw a Fender marked down because the previous owner put a mental finish on it I would buy it but remove the mirrors as well....

If I were ever in a possession of a guitar that held such a story as Syd's mirror Esquire I wouldn't change anything in the way it looks like. Nor would I ever use it to play a gig or even rehearse. If that guitar still had mirrors today it would have been of almost historical value. Now, it's just another Esquire, presuming it still is in one piece.

Mirrored esquire was at the Interstellar exhibition in Paris in 2003...
Dont know where did you get that info, but I assume that that mona lisa is still in the posession of Pink Floyd and co.

Btw., there were rumours about another exhibiton in Venice this year... but I kinda think that wont happen.

Jimmy Page copied Syd by putting mirrors on one of his Yardbirds guitars.
Copied Waters as well with the violin bow. You can see Waters using a bow at Games For May.

The violin bow might have been copied off Eddie Phillips of the Creation.

True about those mirrors though, pretty dire ripoff. Infact Jimmy Page's entire psychedelic look there is a bit suspect. Is he wearing a carpet?!
