Does Roger Sing Enough When He Tours?

Post by Real Pink in the Inside »

I found this on my HD. I posted it on another message board about a year and a half ago. I think some of you might find it interesting:

Here is a list of what David sings on PULSE, what Roger sings on ITF, and so on and so forth. Please correct any mistakes I may have made.

---------------------------------------------

PULSE

Songs David sings alone on (Including backups that sing along with Dave, or Rick singing along):

Breathe
Time
Money
Brain Damage
Us and Them
Eclipse
Wish You Were Here
Shine On You Crazy Diamond
What Do You Want From Me?
Learning To Fly
Astronomy Domine
Keep Talking
Coming Back To Life
A Great Day For Freedom
Sorrow
High Hopes
Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)

Songs David shares singing duty with (Rick excluded):

Comfortably Numb
Run Like Hell
Hey You!

Songs Dave and Rick do not sing on:

The Great Gig in the Sky
On the Run
Speak to Me
Any Colour You Like

David alone – 17 out of 24 songs – 70.8% of the songs
David sharing – 3 out of 24 songs – 12.5% of the songs
Without David – 4 out of 24 songs – 16.7% of the songs

83.3% of the tracks feature David singing.

---------------------------------------------

IN THE FLESH

Songs Roger sings alone on (Including backups that sing along with him):

In the Flesh
The Happiest Days of Our Lives
Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)
Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert
Southhampton Dock
Pigs on the Wing
Welcome to the Machine
Wish You Were Here
Set The Controls For The Heart of the Sun
Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-8)
The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking Part 11 (AKA 5:06 AM - Every Stranger's Eyes)
Perfect Sense (Parts 1 and 2) [Note: I considered this as one song]
The Bravery of Being Out of Range
It's a Miracle
Amused to Death
Brain Damage
Eclipse
Each Small Candle

Songs Roger shares singing duty on:

Mother (Roger sings the majority of the song)
Dogs
Time
Comfortably Numb

Songs Roger doesn't sing on:

Breathe (In The Air)
Money (Note: I think he chose not to sing on this because of the string of songs after it which Roger sings lead vocals on)

Roger alone – 18 out of 24 songs – 75% of the songs
Roger sharing – 4 out of 24 songs – 16.7% of the songs
Without Roger – 2 out of 24 songs – 8.3% of the songs

91.7% of the tracks feature Roger singing.

---------------------------------------------

Percent difference = 91.7% - 83.3% = 8.4%

Both albums have the same amount of songs.

Hopefully this will lay to rest once and for all some peoples' opinions that Roger does not sing enough when he tours.

Some further notes:

Here's a comparison to DSOT

---------------------------------------------

DSOT

Songs that include David (Including backups that sing along with him):

Shine on You Crazy Diamond
Learning To Fly
Sorrow
The Dogs of War
On The Turning Away
Wish You Were Here
Us and Them
Money

Songs that David sings along with another person (Same rules as with PULSE):

Yet Another Movie (I thought I heard someone else singing a part of it...You better double check me on this)
Time
Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)
Comfortably Numb
Run Like Hell

Songs that David does not sing on:

Round and Around
One of These Days

David alone – 8 out of 15 songs - 53.3% of the songs
David sharing – 5 out of 15 songs - 33.3% of the songs
Without David – 2 out of 15 songs – 13.3% of the songs

David sings on 86.7% of the songs

Percent Difference = 91.7% - 86.7% = 5.0% in favor of Waters.

Again, please correct any mistakes I may have made, and I am almost certain I made a few by the looks of how many songs David sung alone on DSOT. I just briefly glanced through the songs, so please correct any mistakes!

---------------------------------------------

>You see, DSOTM was performed in its
>entirity during the PULSE tour but not
>so during DSOT. 3 instrumentals are
>invaribly included in your PULSE stats
>then, agreed ?
>
>Pink Floyd played for 3 hours to Rogers
>2 hour sets,

A one-hour gap is much longer than it really was in general.

so the Final word on the
>matter of facts are that Dave actually
>sings more on Pink Floyd's tours than
>ROger does.
>

We will see....

PULSE's running time: 152 minutes and 55 seconds (This is the CD PLUS five minutes for OOTD. I refuse to time OOTD from the video :)

I excluded Echoes as the majority of concerts on the Division Bell Tour did not include this song, and it is not on the video or the CD

ITF's running time: 147 minutes and 44 seconds

DSOT's running time: 104 minutes and 13 seconds (Note: I do NOT have the video for DSOT, nor have I ever watched it, but I do believe it has a few more songs than the album. Please check up on this for me)

---------------------------------------------

If you take away the track time on songs on PULSE that David does not sing on (Speak to me, On The Run, GGITS, and ACYL; I excluded OOTD as I do not know the track time for it) from the total track time (Which even includes OOTD in my calculations as five minutes even though I did not subtract OOTD from the total time!), you end up getting 137 minutes and 30 seconds.

If you take away the track time for songs on ITF that Roger does not sing on (Breathe and Money) from the total track time of ITF, you end up getting 138 minutes and 14 seconds.

As you can see, they are very close, and I believe leaving out OOTD does not substantially change the answer.

---------------------------------------------

I know that not all concerts have the same songs and such, but when we use ITF in comparison to PULSE or DSOT (all three albums amply reflect the tours of the bands and what was played in general) to come up with a GENERAL answer, we come to the conclusion that Roger sung every bit as much on his last tour as David did on Pink Floyd's Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour and Division Bell Tour, if not more!

By my calculations you're 100% correct unless of course I'm wrong :D

Stats don't lie.

Real pink, what do you do for work? I don't have the patience to sit and figure that out. Something in accounting field?

roger shouldn't sing as much because his voice is old and stupid sounding on songs like time

he should've let jon carin or doyle sing the chorus to mother

and on his new album he should share parts with doyle or jon carin like he did with dave, maye not as much but it'd make a better album

dave has the better sounding voice but i prefer roger's over dave's. i just like rogers voice, always have

but i don't think he should sing lead on a whole record

picture dave gilmour releasing an extended 13 minute newly recorded version of Lie For A Lie and the record company promoting it like it was Wish You Were Here

Picture Dave being really serious playing Lie for A Lie in concert but before he gets into Lie for a Lie he gets even more serious and jams so serious and heavy on Sorrow and Sorrow leads into Lie for a Lie and he goes insane on the guitar and it eventually catches on fire

"Most boring post in the world," huh?

It proves a point, Col. Next time you hear someone say "Roger doesn't sing enough when he tours," you can show them they're bloody wrong.

You could have at least stated your feelings about the post on here...

Roger's voice is alright but Dave's is better and who sang more than who is pointless.

It's not about who sang more, and it's not about "who has the better voice."

The tally was made to simply answer the question "Does Roger Sing Enough When He Tours?"
