There have been a few celebrity deaths recently, but this one has shocked me -

I met him a few times and he was a fascinating character.

Really sad to hear about this one. This man crafted the visual effects to some of my favourite movies ever - his jaw-dropping work on 2OO1: A Space Odyssey is one of the reasons that I understand the sheer amount of work that went into those old practical effects and am in love with how film is made today.
