Pink Floyd Style Album

Post by Ashes andDiamonds07 »

I've been writing a very Floyd inspired album. The first track, 'The Gravitation' (I wrote it on the first of November) was 25 minutes; not intentionally , it was a complete accident. But it's now a twelve minute song. If it wasn't instrumental I'd bee fine with that length, but it is. It has a segue to the second song, 'Reach For The Beam' (written on the 7th of November). It's very enigmatic lyrically. I know what I wrote it about, but I don't want to tell anyone just in case it ruins the feel. I have no idea about the order of the rest of the songs, but they are 'The Path You Made' (my favourite) is around 7 minutes (another very enigmatic song lyrically, but I love the chords for the verse's and quite fond of the chorus) and I wrote it from the 1st of October to the ninth of October, 'I Would Like To See Me Try' (I don't know how long it is) which was written some time in June and intended for a different album I wrote, and 'Greet Me' (originally titled 'Touch Me' but i thought that sounded a little too suggestive) which was my attempt at a blues/rock 'n' roll song during the verse and a 'One Slip' style chorus in terms of the metre and the measures.
I know it's a very vague description, but from what I have written, what do you think?

And if you want to here a demo of 'The Gravitation', PM me. :D

Much as I've tried, every attempt I've made at writing/composing/recording a "Floyd-style album" always ends up becoming something else that has a Floydian influence, but nothing on the order of what I shoot for.

I'd love to hear what you've got, though!

It is definitely a struggle, and no matter how hard you try, it's impossible to truly sound like Pink Floyd.
Everything about them is impossible to replicate, but you can still get a nice sound from it. It is always fun to write an album like that though.
Maybe I should be trying to get a distinct style when it comes to music, but hey - even Pink Floyd started off sounding like something else (I mean with songs like Lucy Leave. By 1967 they had their own sound, of course).

Part of my issue is that I have a tendency to overcomplicate things; a friend of mine once noted that I use more chords in one song than he uses in three. Pink Floyd at their peak could just ride one groove for half an hour.

If you have a lot of chords in one song, it can sound really good (a lot of great songs have more chords than your usual song) but if you have it consistently through out the album, it might get a bit much. Some times it's nice just have a simple four chord chord progression or a three chord one. And with songs like Careful With That Axe Eugene has one chord, D Minor. Breathe has two chords in the chorus, E minor and A major, but the chorus has a lot more.
