DMA Podcast: Roger Water's "Amused To Death"

Post by battra »

As everybody knows, the world lost Jeff Beck recently. It's a great and terrible loss for all of us and it seemed like the perfect time to dig into the album he did with one Roger Waters.

This week we are joined by Keefy of https://www.ghostcultmag.com and we get all up into it.

I was excited to hear that he finally had a new album coming out; I had really loved Radio KAOS and there seemed to be some idea that this was going to be a sequel or in some way related to Radio KAOS. When I saw the video for "What God Wants," I wondered how the hell any of that was supposed to tie into spastic, wheelchair-bound Billy and his twin brother's plight back home.

Nothing that I could dig up in the pre-internet days mentioned anything about any sort of continuation of or relation to the story of KAOS. Feeling like Roger had pussed out and gone running back to making safely "Floydian sounding" stuff, I decided not to bother with it at all. Then I heard that he wasn't going to be touring because he was butthurt about poor album sales (maybe playing some shows would spur some sales? I dunno...I've never been in that position before, *shrug*.) Then he went on the air spouting about how ridiculous it was that the BBC wouldn't play "What God Wants" despite the fact that it features Jeff Beck, whom he called "a national treasure," then went on to say "so am I" and I literally laughed out loud as I switched stations and decided that I could no longer take him seriously. As much as I had felt that AMLOR was cash grab "product," at least Gilmour wasn't publicly fellating himself.

Sometime not too long after, a local station did a Pink Floyd Overkill (six hour marathon) and I bought some blank tapes and captured it all. Somewhere in '96, I found myself listening to one of the tapes and got captivated by this one song that I didn't recognize and so figured that it had to have been off of "Amused To Death" (by this time, pretty much the only Floyd-related recording that I hadn't yet at least heard at a friend's house or something,) but wasn't sure of the title. The guitar riff reminded me of "In The Flesh," and I surmised that the title would have something to do with battle because they kept repeating the phrase "with the bravery of being out of range," towards the end.

Life has a way of pulling you back into it and it was another several years before the "In The Flesh" CD/DVD set came out and the live performances of the songs from ATD led me to the CD shop to pick up my first copy of it. Something like a decade and a half later, I would win a copy of the new mix from a local radio station.

I choose to listen to the original mix. Especially "The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range."

I still have never heard the original mix.

I intend to purchase an OG Pressing of it, but, as I said on the show, they're expensive.
