Tips for Learning a New Song

What do you find, besides just practicing, to be the most effective method for learning to play a new song? Do you guys general break the song up into pieces and then combine everything a bit later? How do you remember all the notes to a song? Any tips o suggestions would greatly be appreciated

I mostly just try to play with the song. When I can play some parts a little bit, and when I know how the song exactly goes, I study the song in parts.
