David Gilmour Show @ Wembley Arena - Sep 2004

Post by Keith Jordan »

As part of the Glorious events surrounding the celebration of 50 years of the Fender Stratocaster guitar, David Gilmour will be performing at Wembley Arena on 24th September 2004 in aid of Nordoff-Robins Music Therapy. The concert will feature a mix of legends and contemporary artists. Tickets go on sale on Saturday 19th June 2004.

The show will be sponsored by Miller Genuine Draft have confirmed so far Stratocaster playing heroes including David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Joe Walsh (The Eagles), Hank Marvin (The Shadows), Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music), Paul Rodgers (Free/ Bad Co.), Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Mike Rutherford/Paul Carrick (Mike & the Mechanics) and Gary Moore.

They will join forces to pay homage to the world's favourite guitar. The legends will be joined on the night by Amy Winehouse and Jamie Cullum in a triumphant combination of vintage and contemporary artists.

It has been confirmed that David Gilmour will be playing his serial-numbered 001 Stratocaster on the night, the very first of its kind made by Leo Fender in July 1954 (Although it is not the first production model.). Spanning five decades of guitar music and with more artists to be confirmed the MILLER STRAT PACK line-up is already a collaboration of the biggest names history has to offer.

Martin Brady, MD Fender Europe Ltd said: "this is an historic occasion for Fender and the Stratocaster guitar. Never before have so many legendary names come together on one stage to celebrate an icon in rock music and Fender are delighted to have Miller Genuine Draft's support. Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy is a charity that is close to our hearts and the work they carry out is inspirational. We are incredibly excited about the possibility of helping such a worthy cause through funds raised by the concert".

"Monies raised from this wonderful concert will help fund our outreach programmes across the UK, making Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy even more available. We are delighted that Fender are supporting Nordoff Robbins," commented Audrey Hoare, Director of Fundraising.

First unveiled in the early fifties, the Fender Stratocaster rapidly rose to iconic status through boundary-pushing artists such as David Gilmour with Pink Floyd, Joe Walsh for his distinctive country-rock riffage and, probably the most famous Strat player of all time Jimi Hendrix. Following a stratospheric performance at the Monterey festival in June 1967, Jimi successfully positioned the Fender as one of the most iconic guitars ever when he was photographed on his knees, as his Strat burnt on the stage in front of him.

Information should be showing up on Ents24.com soon.

You can get tickets via phone on 020 890 24141 and in person from Wembley Box Office. They go on sale at 9am on Saturday 19th June.

What a wonderful line up but just to see Gilmour in concert would be enough for me! I'm sure that it will be fantastic. Thanks for the information.

I did go online to get a ticket for this earlier but then thought twice, it looks to me like its just going to be a bunch of guitarists going widdly widdly for several hours, it will drive me mad so Ive decided not to bother, also Wembley Arena is the worst venue ive ever been to. But if David does want to do a proper show again I'll be there!! The RFH ones were awesome!

I would love to see Dave play live again but alas it shall not be. At least I had the honor of seeing his solo tour in 84 and with the Floyd in 88. The man is awesome live. Hopefully there will be a DVD of the event. Now if only Roger would show up to talk................ A man can dream can't I?
Keep hoping, stranger things have happened.
