A good SONG (notice the emphasis) is, to me, one in which the melody sticks in one's head long after listening. You don't even have to particularly LIKE the song...if it sticks in your head, it must be well written...there must be SOMETHING good about it.
For example..."Ignition Remix" by R. Kelly. I don't much care for what passes for "R&B" these days...it seems to be more focused upon the "R" than on the "B"...however, I sometimes find myself singing the hook out loud when the radio isn't on in the car.
I'm stuck with it.
Now...I differentiate between "song" and...say..."composition" due to the fact that, for the purpose of this post, "song" refers to a piece of music within the standard parameters of "popular" music.
The Revealing Science Of God by Yes is far longer than 3-5 minutes and goes through so many moods and changes that it almost seems an insult to call it a "song." It is a "composition"...and is made up of several segments that would have made good "songs" on their own.

That's sort of the way I feel.Useful Idiot wrote:I can't really explain my love for music. If it clicks with me, I'll declare it good. If not, too bad.
Trying to say what makes a song good to me, well, it's hard but I'll try.
It's got a good hook or it makes me feel good in some way.... It has not really touch me, but hit me in the gut. Take Pigs: 3DO. That hits me right in the gut.
