Wouldn't you miss me?

Post by crofloyd »

I recently bought Syd Barret's The Best Of album and mostly liked it.
Certanly the highlights are:
OCTOPUS (sounds like a cartoon tune, pretty good)
TERRAPIN (never heard Gilmour's cover. Any opinions?)
HERE I GO (reminds me of fifties pop)
and my favourite
GIGOLO AUNT - rocking tune. Is it just me or does it looks like Get Back (The Beatles)? Did Rick Wright played on that song because you can hear that Atom Heart Mother distorted/jangling piano?
WE WANT MORE!!!!!!
I am activist on two sides: anti-war and offical Pink Floyd BBC recording![/u]

Had to edit for boo boos

It's always struck me as odd that Gigolo Aunt is to acclaimed - personally, I don't really like it that much at all. I prefer his low-key, melancholy tracks like No Man's land, Late Night, Waving My Arms in the Air/I never Lied To You, and, of course, Opal.

"Opel" is one of my most favorite Barrett songs. I love how haunting his voice sounds on the "I'm tryyyyyying"...etc. parts. I mean...WOW!

In the same vein, I like Dominoes - haunting, melancholy etc.

Gilmour's "Terrapin" cover is o.k., but a bit... too perfect? too pretty? lacks the dramatic intensity of the original...

Its not a favourite for me either, it always makes me think of Chas & Dave.

Id say my fave is probably Baby Lemonade or Clowns and Jugglers, tough choice.

I recently bought Wouldn't You Miss Me? as well.. I personally like the following best (thought they should have included 'Rats' IMO)-

- Opel - perhaps Syd's best post-Floyd vocals
- Octopus
- Dark Globe/WYMM - very sad lyrics... I've wondered btw where the name "Dark Globe" originated
-Late Night
- Baby Lemonade

No Good Trying I found interesting in part cuz the Soft Machine performed on it, and I've never heard them, tho I heard of their association with the Floyd from the UFO club.

The title originated from a passage in chapter 9 from the book; "Lord Of The Rings."

and bits of the story being told in Matilda Mother could be from the Hobbit - I've also heard that the Gnome was inspired by that too.
