BEST SONG
For me, "Welcome to the Machine" is the best Floyd song.
I recall that in 1974 I heard DSOTM for the first time and didn't think
too much of it.It sounded too polished and commercial compared to the
Hard Rock acts I was following at the time. Then in the fall of '75 I
borrowed WYWH off a friend and was struck immediately with that
particular track. To me it best exemplifies the albums theme of absence.
It's a song for today's computer age that was,you might say,20 years before its time! I also think it's one of the best synthesizer tracks in rock.
In fact that whole sequence of Welcome to the Machine,Have a Cigar,
and Wish You Were Here is one of the best 18 Minutes in Rock History.

Best Song (Whole Band)
My Apologies to the originator of this Topic.
Welcome to the Machine was in essence credited only to Waters so I
guess it doesn't necessarily qualify.
To may a choice from the list,I'd pick Saucerful of Secrets, especially
the Live versions circa 1972.Two performances come to mind -
The Hollywood Bowl performance of September '72 and the Brighton
Dome in early '72.The Bowl had an excellent drumming performance from
Mason.(Being a former drummer myself) and both performances
featured great quad effects courtesy of Gilmour's bottleneck guitar effects
work between the 2nd & 3rd Part of the song.It must have been amazing
to be there to hear the quad effects during these pieces.

yes.Fireland wrote:It has to be Echoes. It is one of the best floyd's songs, it's just perfect as it is. It sends shivers down my spine when the guitar comes in around 18:11!!
Cheers!
gotta say i dont like any live version ive heard of it...
though thats the opposite of Careful With That Axe Eugene - hate the studio version, love the live ones (in particular the one on UmmaGumma)

I vpted echoes, but it just occured to me i never said why.
I reckon it goes without saying, Echoes uses surround sound better than any other song ever with so much detail in the background it has to be listened to several times before you've even half heard it. In the same way that 1983 was the best from Hendrix this is simply the most detailed pink floyd track of all time. For anyone in doubt it's a fine piece with whale like beauty and showed pink floyd's skills AS A BAND more than any other song the did before or after.
