zee - identity: found a copy!

Post by J Ed »

Zee - Identity, on CD
finally found this Floydian rarity last weekend
in a shop in Montreal, on the seediest stretch of Rue St Catherine

it was Ricks 2nd "solo" album, from ~1985, and is it ever weak!
maybe a little better than Profiles, maybe not (more songs, no Gilmour)

its classic 80s "beepbeep" music,
you know 80s dancetechno with programmed drums and minimalist repetitive staccato synths
but at the time there was actually good technodance music
like why didnt Rick collaborate with Cabaret Voltaire if this is the direction he wanted to go in?

maybe Rick was so traumatised by his firing from PF that he subconciously managed to find the dullest, most forgettable project to attach his name to?

in fairness some songs do hint at a Gabriel or Eno influence, if you really really try to listen for one,
but such hints quickly dissipitate back into more shapeless formulaic beep beep rhythms

still its a long sought rarity and you bet I'm geekishly ecstatic to have added it to my record collection!
thats why I gotta tell the world!

... so. Are you going to rip some of it for others to hear and dislike?

I came to think that Zee isn't that hard to find if you know where to look, because I got one LP even here in Prague. I only like about three songs on the album, but that's worth having the LP, which was very cheap. I've seen a CD too later on, but I didn't buy that.

even if the consesus was that circulating copies is cool
I'm not sure how to go about it, technically speaking
Ive never uploaded anything myself

I agree, it would be one of the better songs on the album.

Zee: Identity - found a copy!

Hey Flame-Sky Diver; I thought Zee was the only PF not to have ever been on CD? You got a copy?

I have seen a copy, but I think it was a bootleg, not an official release. Like I said I didn't buy it (having the original LP). J Ed said in his post that he has it on a CD, perhaps he can tell if it's official or not.

its a silver CD with the Harvest logo
in fine print it says EMI Hayes Middlesex England
and printed in Holland
artwork is printed like a commercial CD
with shiny silver ink
probably not from a home printer!

it does not have the bonus tracks from the singles
which the bootleg supposedly does

think I should take it to sothebys or the antique roadshow?

Looks good to me. I really had no idea if Zee was originally on CD or not.

Funny how you get that deja Vu feeling looking at old posts. This one is from 3 years ago I think and yet echoes the content of the Zee debate of this week

Yes. We're all just swimming in a fish bowl, aren't we?

Having heard the music on the Myspace page, it's clear that Zee didn't improve with age
