I liked "The Aviator", mostly for the costumes and sets. DiCaprio is terrible with accents. Not sure why. He's in a new movie with a really horrendous-sounding English accent.
The strange thing about "The Aviator" is how much they focussed on the relationship between Katharine Hepburn and Howard Hughes. I've looked up information about Hepburn and it's hard to find much documentation about her time with him.

The Aviator as a film is merely OK.
As a biography of Howard Hughes it's terrible. It is both innacurate and one-sided (I took an interest in Hughes a while ago)
Leonardo was actually pretty good in The Departed. But generally I hate him. He's just a little too much of a pretty boy, and he never plays anyone with a real pair of balls...which is pretty much his acting range.
Gangs of New york was beyond horrible...

It was a great movie. There were many references/jokes that only Bostonians will know which I loved the most.henno wrote:speaking of scorsese.....
went to see the Departed last night in the cinema... feckin brilliant movie!!
although it took a little getting used to the boston accents,
The Boston accent is easy... pronounce "ar" as if its an "ah". Actually, the Boston accent stems from the days of an English accent from Boston's colonial ancestors.
you can't pahk yoah cah in Hahvid Yahd.
you can't park your car in Harvard Yard.
One thing I don't get is, we have a tendency to add an "r" sound to words that end with an "a". For example... "Media Center." Bostonians say "Medier Centah". Go figyah.

Last night I watched most of DePalma's "Scarface" after mentioning it here a while ago - plus I was playing GTA: Vice City and that kind of got me in the mood for some Tony Montana-isms.
Tonight I watched all three parts of a BBC mini-series called "The Line of Beauty". I think I was expecting it to be more trashy and scandalous, but I wasn't disappointed.
My husband asked if I would go and see "Rocky Balboa" around Christmas. I am so tempted to, but I know I will end up crying. I did that all three times we went to see "Superman Returns" back in the summer, and I think he found it a bit embarrassing that his wife was sobbing as we were walking out of the theatre. He was watching "Rocky 2" the other night and I made the mistake of hanging around to see the ending, and of course I cried like a whiny bitch. I am a sucker for underdogs and geeks. Anyway...I still want to see the new Casino Royale.

Yes, it's a series of vignettes (maybe 12)... so some of them likely will appeal more than others. The black and white cinematography looks great throughout, although the scenes were filmed separately over many years.henno wrote:anyone ever see 'coffee and cigarettes' by Jim Jarmusch
any good????
I've noticed that (for me anyway) Jarmusch's films seem to get better as they go along. This one seemed that way, in that the last sketch (I think called "Champagne") was just fantastic, totally amazing I thought.
