Compilations are useful in the early days of a band to help them make a bit of money whilst recording a new album, or being on tour and not putting material out. They are also good as a retrpspective, to help new fans discover the band. They are also a good way for copyright owners to make money from back catalogues!
What is your favourite? What would you recommend to a new fan?

Oof! Relics third album bought (Dark Side and Piper).
But Echoes is such a beautiful collection. Every compilation since diminishing returns compared to Echoes.
Hardly bothered with Works or (even as dirt cheap as it was) A Collection Of Great Dance Songs.
How would have turned out if I bought Relics and A Collection of Great Dance Songs after Dark Side I've no idea. And that never happened anyway. After that it gets sketch which album bought next!

Should I cheat and go for the Australian CD of Relics that's got Crumbling Land on it?
Wow, the Echoes compilation with Crumbling Land on it.

Echoes for mainly nostalgic reasons, helping me to discover more of pink floyd before "learning" to properly listen to full albums

Relics - cost less than £1 new when it was released and my first introduction to early Floyd
