In a publicity video posted on his social media on 26th July, David Gilmour said, “The album opens with an instrumental piece, called Black Cat. Which is me playing the piano, it has some strings on it, and some nice slide guitar and a main electric guitar played on my new favourite black strat, which is the black cat strat of course,. I suppose I like to get people into the mood at the beginning of the album, by having a little piece of quiet instrumental music that, er, that gets them in the mood for what’s to follow”. David Gilmour’s Black Strat

The iconic black Fender Stratocaster, affectionately known as “The Black Strat,” played a pivotal role in the sound of Pink Floyd. Gilmour acquired it in 1970 from Manny’s Music in New York, replacing a similar guitar lost during a Pink Floyd tour in the United States. Originally a sunburst model, it was repainted black at Manny’s. Over the years, Gilmour made several modifications, including changing necks between maple and rosewood fingerboards, installing a Gibson PAF Humbucker, and replacing the bridge pickup. Despite these alterations, the body remains the only original part. The Black Strat featured prominently in Pink Floyd’s music, including tracks like “Money,” “Comfortably Numb,” and “Shine on You Crazy Diamond”. The original guitar was, of course, sold at auction for charity. The guitar you hear on Black Cat video is actually a new black strat, called The Black Cat Strat!
