The “spitting incident” refers to an event that took place during Pink Floyd’s “In the Flesh” tour in Montreal on July 6, 1977. During the concert, Roger Waters became increasingly frustrated with the audience’s behaviour, particularly with a fan who was setting off fireworks. In a moment of anger, Waters spat on the fan. This incident was a culmination of Waters’ growing disillusionment with the band’s audience and the rock concert experience in general.
This moment of frustration and alienation became a significant inspiration for Pink Floyd’s next album, “The Wall”. The album, released in 1979, is a rock opera that explores themes of isolation, abandonment, and the metaphorical “wall” that people build around themselves. Waters modelled the character of Pink, the protagonist of the album, after himself and former band member Syd Barrett. The Wall’s concept was a reflection on Waters’ own experiences and emotions, including the feelings of disconnect and frustration that led to the spitting incident.
