Pink Floyd’s “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” Tour, which ran from 1987 to 1989, was a pivotal moment for the band as it marked their first major tour without founding member Roger Waters. Led by David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright, the tour aimed to re-establish the band’s presence and support their new album of the same name. They embarked on an extensive global journey with their crew, performing over 200 shows across Europe, North America, Australia, and Japan.
The tour was renowned for its ground-breaking stage production. As ever, they pushed technological boundaries with sophisticated lighting systems, expansive laser displays, and the innovative use of quadraphonic sound, which enveloped audiences in a 360-degree auditory experience. Massive inflatable props, including the iconic flying pig and floating beds, were synchronized with the music to enhance the visual spectacle. The incorporation of a large circular screen projecting surreal and thematic imagery further enriched the concerts.
The tour was both a commercial and critical success, grossing over $135 million and drawing enthusiastic responses from fans and critics alike. It not only revitalized Pink Floyd’s career but also set new standards for live rock performances with its fusion of music, technology, and visual art. This ambitious undertaking influenced the future of concert production, inspiring artists to envision live shows as immersive, multi-sensory experiences.
Musically, the band blended new material from A Momentary Lapse of Reason with classic Pink Floyd hits, delivering performances that honored their legacy while introducing fresh elements. They expanded their lineup with additional musicians and backing vocalists to faithfully reproduce the intricate soundscapes of their studio recordings in a live setting.
Interestingly, amidst the tour’s success, the band navigated legal disputes with Roger Waters over the use of the Pink Floyd name and material. Despite these challenges, the tour’s achievements underscored the band’s resilience and ability to innovate.to Pink Floyd’s enduring appeal and ability to adapt to changes within the band. It maintained their status as one of the most innovative and visually compelling live acts in rock history.
