Home / David Gilmour Albums / Luck and Strange [2024]
Luck and Strange is the fifth solo studio album by David Gilmour and features collaboration with his talented daughter Romany Gilmour. Release on 6 September 2024. The album was produced by David Gilmour and a much younger person Charlie Andrews. Remember that Pink Floyd were only young themselves when recording Dark Side of the Moon for example, so a little freshness is a welcomed addition in the producers seat. On that topic, David told Rolling Stone magazine, “He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.“
The new album from Dave Gilmour is definitely a continuation of bringing his family into the process. His long time lyrical contributor and wife Polly Samson is at the centre of the album providing lyrics to accompany David’s emotive guitar and melodic pieces across the album. David has also brought in his daughter Romany Gilmour – who contributes harp and lead vocals on the second single, Between Two Points. Last but not least, David’s son Charlie Gilmour has contributed lyrics for the final song on the album Scattered.

The album was recorded over five months at Mark Knopfler’s studio British Grove and included some well known faces like long time Pink Floyd bass player Guy Pratt. There was also legendary Steve Gadd on drums in addition to Steve DiStanislao, familiar on David Gilmour tours. There were also recording sessions at David’s own Medina Studio but was unavailable at times due to renovations and selling the house property it was included in.
There will be a very brief tour for the Luck and Strange album with only a handful of shows in Rome in Sep/Oct 2024, Royal Albert Hall in London in October 2024, the rest of October in Los Angeles before heading over to the East Coast of USA for five nights at Madison Square Garden in New York.
This page presents all the information we know so far about the album, including the first two singles The Piper’s Call and Between Two Points and the people involved.

Music Videos
1st Single: The Piper’s Call
The first single is an original David Gilmour composition which covers lots of lyrical themes. The album has a central theme about mortality and death.
2nd Single Between Two Points
The music video was filmed by Gavin Elder, a long time collaborator of David Gilmour’s, and is set in both Manchester and London. The location where David and Romany are at the steps by a river is down the steps from The Elder Press Café leading down to the Thames. The video is directed by long-time Gilmour collaborator Gavin Elder so not sure if there is a connection there. The video also takes us to the The Kings Arms pub in Salford which has significance because Roger Quigley, one half of the Montgolfier Brothers who wrote the song, had his studio in the King’s Arms. So there you go, a little back story.
Third Single Dark and Velvet Nights
Dark and Velvet Nights is the third single from David Gilmour’s Luck and Strange album. It features Steve Gadd on drums, Romany Gilmour providing harmonies and a really nice guitar solo from David Gilmour. I have some really nice photos for you on the Dark and Velvet Nights Music Video page and you can look at our lyrics analysis too.
And here is the Official Lyrics Video to Dark and Velvet Nights
Fourth video: Luck and Strange (song)
The fourth video from David’s new album Luck and Strange is released on 12th September 2024.
Watch this space for the video.
Release Formats
The album is available across all the usual formats and there are collectors editions scattered geographically and in the independent stores too. I am going to go all out and order the deluxe LP box set to go with the Vinyl White I have already pre-ordered. I would have just ordered the deluxe if I had know about it, because the deluxe versions were not announced until later on in the timeline.

Photos of the Recording Process
You may have noticed a lot of photos were captured by Polly Samson during the recording process. It is fascinating to see behind the scenes how the album has come together and have a nosey at the people involved over the past 18 months. The great news is the deluxe box set of the album features a comprehensive book that tell the story of the recording process through pictures. If you have the spare cash knocking about, and you like the album, definitely worth an investment.
