The sale of Roger Keith (Syd) Barrett’s final belongings were sold by Cheffins auctioneers in Cambridge, England on 28th and 29th November 2006. The sale of the 77 items raised a staggering GBP £119,890 (USD $233,786 – Euros 177,437). The ten paintings alone raised over £55,000 and the two bicycles over £10,000! The sale included such things as his armchair he used to sit in at 6 St Margaret’s Square, his home-made bread bin, tools, notebooks and binders, bikes, books and his surviving paintings! David Gilmour’s third solo album was re-released on 27th and 28th November 2006 in UK/Europe and America respectively. The new edition is now bundled with a bonus DVD. The bonus DVD features a preview of one track from the On An Island Tour DVD which is due to be released in early 2007. It also features some Abbey Road footage that David and friends shot for a Channel 4 documentary: which will now be broadcast early next year probably January 2007. It will also be broadcast in America on VH1 on 25th Nov 2006 at 9PM. Amongst other things, David Gilmour will induct Brian Wilson into the UK Music Hall of Fame. Brian will also be performing live. As previously reported, David Gilmour’s third solo album On An Island is to be re-released along with a free bonus DVD. There are going to be two versions of the DVD: one for the American market from Sony BMG and one for the European Market from EMI. The difference is that that European/EMI one has an extra video on the bonus DVD and has been re-packaged! The American verion has the bonus DVD shrinkwrapped to the original CD release. Instore dates have gone back a week from previously advised, to: Europe – Monday 27th November; the rest of the world – Tuesday 28th November. UK/Europe Version from EMI – (27th Nov 2006) In Europe, via EMI, there will be the original album package in book form, with the DVD mounted on a circular tab inside the front cover. The family of Syd Barrett have stated that part of the monies raised from the auction of his final belongings, to be held at Cheffins Auctioneers in Cambridge, his home town, on 29th November, will be used for educational development within the art world. Syd Barrett trained at Camberwell Art School in London where his talents as an artist were developed. Syd always considered himself more an artist than a musician and the family would like Syd to be remembered in the future not only as a talented musician but also as someone whose love of art was with him most strongly in his final days.
