Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets is a touring band formed by Nick Mason, the drummer and co-founder of Pink Floyd. The band focuses on performing the early music of Pink Floyd, especially the material predating their 1973 album “The Dark Side of the Moon.” This project is Mason’s endeavour to bring Pink Floyd’s earlier and less mainstream works to a wider audience.
Band Members
The band features a line-up of accomplished musicians:
- Nick Mason (drums, gong, bell, percussion): The driving force behind the band, Mason is the only member of Pink Floyd to have played on every one of their albums.
- Guy Pratt (vocals, bass, occasional percussion): A bassist and vocalist, Pratt has previously collaborated with Pink Floyd.
- Gary Kemp (vocals, guitars): Best known for his work with the 1980s band Spandau Ballet, Kemp brings a distinctive vocal and guitar style to the group.
- Lee Harris (guitars, backing vocals): Harris adds depth to the band’s sound with his guitar work and backing vocals.
- Dom Beken (keyboards, synthesizers, organ, piano, programming, backing vocals): Beken contributes to the band’s sound with a range of keyboard and synthesizer textures.
Touring History
The band debuted in May 2018 with a sold-out show at Dingwall’s in London, followed by a series of small shows and a European tour in September 2018. They embarked on a North American tour in 2019, and a planned 2020 European tour was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A second North American tour, initially scheduled for January 2022, was also postponed and rescheduled for September. During one of their performances at the Beacon Theatre in New York in April 2019, Roger Waters, a former bandmate of Mason in Pink Floyd, made a surprise appearance, performing “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun” with the band.
Musical Focus and Performance Style
Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets brings to life the music from the most democratic era of Pink Floyd, encompassing albums like “Atom Heart Mother,” “Meddle,” and “Obscured by Clouds.” This era was marked by collaborative creativity within the band and produced some of Pink Floyd’s most experimental work. The band’s concerts offer a rocking experience of early English psychedelia, and their performances have been lauded as equal to those of Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, or David Gilmour. The shows feature a rich combination of lights, films, and smoke, enhancing the psychedelic atmosphere of the music. A highlight of their performances is the revised version of “Echoes,” a 23-minute epic from the 1971 album “Meddle,” which serves as the centerpiece of the show.
Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets serves as an important act of stewardship, preserving and showcasing the lesser-known parts of Pink Floyd’s legacy, and delivering them with the excitement and freshness of a live performance.
